Gardenstone is a rural garden just 6 kms from Dannevirke.
The house garden features roses, clematis, perennials and mixed plantings. It is divided into garden rooms by arches, and hedges of buxus, hornbeam, beech & holly. Local river stone has been used to build a large well and retaining walls.
A kilometre-long walk takes visitors through mature kihikatea, totara and matai, past drifts of arthropodiums and statuary, to seats and a woodland stream.
There is a formal potager with a central water feature, raised beds, brick paving and statues.
A large grass Cretan labyrinth is at the bottom of a lime walk, bordered by mature trees and a babbling stream.
Labyrinths:
A single path maze
A'walking' meditation
An exercise in right brain intuitive awareness
An opportunity to just 'be'
A calming therapeutic experience
An opportunity to hear the voice within
An ancient mystic experience
There has been a modern revival of interest in the positive effects of the labyrinth experience and many are constructed in churches, airports, parks, retreat centres, health centres, schools and private gardens.
Walkers find solace or answers to problems as they follow the continuous path.
