Hinemoa Labyrinth – Paraparaumu, Kapiti Coast

Paraparaumu 581

ABOUT THIS LABYRINTH

The labyrinth was poured in three disks, 75mm thick concrete reinforced with steel. There are 6 radial cuts. The path is 340mm with the field measuring 20mm. Once the concrete was set the surface was coated with a sealant then painted, using paving paint with grit to give a non-slip surface. This was applied by roller with the design then marked out and painted by hand. The overall size is 10 metres.

When deciding to build the Hinemoa Labyrinth, ideas were drawn from other labyrinths such as Grace Cathedral, (San Francisco), Valerie Lagorio Labyrinth (Grey Lynn, Auckland NZ), and the Frederic and Margaret Wallis Labyrinth at the Hutt Hospital (Lower Hutt, Wellington). All these labyrinths are medieval replicas of the Chartres Labyrinth in France. Geethal built this labyrinth for his wife Kathryn as a special gift to her.
